As India celebrates its 74th Independence Day, it is time to recall how India proved wrong every prediction that was made by western doomsayers about its disintegration into several units, due to its diverse culture and multi-ethnicity. In the last 73 years, India has become a vibrant democracy, in spite of repeated onslaughts by vested political interests, and has emerged as a powerful nation-state, in full control of its destiny. While political independence made India a modern nation-state seven decades ago, the political, economic, and cultural awakening remained to be realized for all these years since independence until Prime Minister Narendra Modi took charge of the country’s governance. The Indian constitution is the most sacred document for all law-abiding citizens of this country and the first article of the same constitution states that India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States”. Unlike the American constitution, it does not use the word ‘federation’.
